With India losing the fourth Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, discussions around the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Test team have intensified. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar weighed in on the debate, highlighting the stark differences between the two stalwarts and their roles in the longest format.
Both Kohli and Sharma have faced criticism for their recent underwhelming performances, sparking speculation about their longevity in Test cricket. Addressing the issue, Manjrekar made a pointed observation about their contributions.

“There is no comparison between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as Test batters. Virat is right up there—a great Test batter. Rohit, on the other hand, is a good Test batter but a great white-ball player,” Sanjay Manjrekar said during his analysis on Star Sports.
Manjrekar emphasized that Kohli’s track record warrants patience, advocating for the Indian team to give him more time to rediscover his form. “Virat deserves a longer rope. It’s not just about him, though. I question what the batting coach is doing. We need to address the issues plaguing such a fine player. Enough has been said about Kohli; we should let him be,” he added.
On the other hand, the situation with Rohit Sharma appears more complex. Manjrekar pointed out that decisions about Sharma’s future might not rest solely with him.

“It’s not entirely up to Rohit. The chairman of selectors has the authority to make decisions for the betterment of Indian cricket. That power lies with him, not with Rohit himself,” Sanjay Manjrekar noted. He also remarked on Rohit’s demeanor, suggesting that the pressure might be taking its toll. “Rohit seems to be struggling mentally, but the approach to his situation should differ from Kohli’s. Virat’s case is unique, while the selectors have a larger role to play in deciding Rohit’s future.”
As India grapples with these challenges, the contrasting dynamics surrounding Kohli and Sharma could shape the future of Indian Test cricket.
