Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised skipper Rohit Sharma for his selfless decision before the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia. Manjrekar commended Rohit for prioritizing the team’s interests over his own by voluntarily stepping down from his opening role to accommodate KL Rahul. The decision underscored Rohit’s leadership qualities and his commitment to team dynamics.

Rohit had missed the first Test in Perth due to paternity leave, where KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal excelled as openers. The duo’s 201-run partnership in the second innings was instrumental in India’s 295-run victory. Acknowledging their chemistry and form, Rohit opted to bat in the middle order in the second Test, ensuring the successful opening pair remained intact.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Sanjay Manjrekar highlighted the importance of this decision, particularly in maintaining the momentum for Rahul, who showed glimpses of his potential in the series opener.

“This call was very important, considering the confidence the two openers displayed. However, this Test presents a different challenge. The key now is for KL Rahul to sustain his form. Both Rahul and Jaiswal are looking solid, but it’s almost imperative for Rahul to capitalize on his promise after the last Test,” Sanjay Manjrekar said.

Sanjay Manjrekar also praised Rohit’s leadership style, emphasizing his selflessness as a defining trait. He pointed to Rohit’s batting in the 2023 World Cup as an example of how he consistently places the team above personal milestones.
“Rohit Sharma is a leader who puts the team first, which sets him apart. His decision to step back as an opener demonstrates his unique approach and understanding of cricketing logic,” he added.

India entered the second Test, a pink-ball affair at Adelaide Oval, with a 1-0 lead after their emphatic win in Perth under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy. However, the opening day presented challenges for the Indian batters. Veteran Australian pacer Mitchell Starc struck early, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal for a golden duck and later adding the wickets of KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. While Rahul managed a steady 37 and Gill contributed 31, Virat Kohli’s dismissal for just seven runs left India struggling. Starc’s fiery spell before tea underscored Australia’s determination to level the series in this high-stakes encounter.
