Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar feels there is no reason behind the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma not being able to score a century in the ODI format. The India captain looked in great touch during his 34-run innings against New Zealand at Hyderabad, however, got out trying to hit through the line against Blair Tickner. The Indian skipper ended up giving a simple catch to Daryl Mitchell standing at mid-on in the 13th over of the match.

Sharma scored his last ODI ton in 2020 against Australia in Bangalore. Since then, Rohit Sharma has looked good in recent matches but has not been able to the three figures so far. Manjrekar spoke on the same and said that till the time India is getting big scores, the management would not be bothered about the lack of big scores from the captain.

During a chat with the broadcasters, Sanjay Manjrekar said, “As long as India are getting the big scores, the team management wouldn’t be too worried. But, you want all your batters to be sort of get big scores. Nonetheless, I don’t see any problem with the way he is hitting the ball.”

He further added, “Today he was leaving a lot of balls outside the off-stump, which made me think he has got his mind set on getting the big score. And then the wicket happened. Mid-on and mid-off were inside the circle. So it’s a huge temptation for somebody like Rohit to try and play a shot like that.”

Rohit Sharma hit four boundaries and a couple of sixes against New Zealand in the opening game of the three-match ODI series and looked solid beside Shubman Gill, who scored a double-century.

Explaining the same, Sanjay Manjrekar said, “I have no idea as to why the big scores are not coming. I don’t see any obvious signs there that he is not batting well. With Virat Kohli, we saw that he was not in the kind of form we expect or what got used to over the years. Rohit Sharma seems to be striking the ball pretty well, goes to 30-40s, 70-80s in the series against Sri Lanka.”

He further added, “But the hundreds are evading him. I don’t have a problem with him not getting hundreds as long as India are scoring 350 and above. A hundred might just be around the corner because there are no obvious signs that he is out of form or struggling,” the former player concluded with hope.”
