Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka has opened up about the criticism surrounding his franchise, admitting that he has become a frequent target on social media following the team’s recent struggles in the IPL. As the countdown to IPL 2026 begins, Goenka addressed the narrative with honesty, while also backing his team’s direction.

Lucknow Super Giants made a strong start to their IPL journey with two consecutive third-place finishes. However, the last two seasons have seen them fall short of playoff qualification. In contrast, the Gujarat Titans—who entered the league at the same time—have already built a more consistent record, including a title win, which has only increased the pressure on LSG.

“100 per cent. But, I don’t spend a lot of time on social media,” Sanjiv Goenka said, acknowledging the criticism. “I understand 5-10 percent of social media… Sanjiv Goenka is a punching bag. I live with my conscience, I am a very secure person in my own skin.”

Despite the noise, Goenka didn’t hesitate to admit that the franchise made mistakes last season. “When I make a mistake, I openly admit I made a mistake. Last year, we didn’t even have the team to challenge for the trophy,” he said. “We made a lot of mistakes in the auction and while preparing.”

Looking ahead, the owner believes those lessons have helped reshape the team’s approach.

“This year, we have tried to plug those mistakes. We realised what comfort a balanced squad gives,” he added. A major talking point remains the leadership of Rishabh Pant, who endured a mixed season after being signed for a record fee. However, Goenka strongly defended his captain, pointing to the team’s injury concerns. “What will any captain do if he doesn’t have four fast bowlers? You have to look at it from what he had,” Goenka explained.

He also dismissed speculation around Pant’s future with the franchise. “I personally have great confidence in Rishabh Pant… I think some social media sites need views. Sanjiv Goenka becomes a very happy and convenient punching bag.”

With IPL 2026 around the corner, Lucknow Super Giants will begin their campaign against Delhi Capitals, aiming to turn promise into performance and silence the critics on the field.
