A viral nets video has once again pushed Sanju Samson into the spotlight ahead of the T20 World Cup, with the India batter seen receiving batting tips from former World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh. The brief clip, widely shared on social media, has sparked fresh conversation around Yuvraj’s influence and whether his guidance could prove decisive for Samson at a crucial phase of his career.

Yuvraj has quietly built a reputation as a mentor for the next generation of Indian batters. His technical inputs and game awareness have previously helped players such as Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma refine their approaches.

Shubman Gill has since grown into India’s Test and ODI captain, while Abhishek has established himself as a first-choice T20I opener, renowned for his fearless powerplay hitting. That track record only adds weight to the significance of Yuvraj’s interaction with Samson.

For Samson, the timing could not be more important. In the aftermath of India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024 and the retirement of senior stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the format, the Kerala batter moved up the pecking order.

Backed as an opener in T20 internationals, Samson enjoyed a productive run, scoring 559 runs in 18 matches at an average of 32.88 and a blistering strike rate of 178, including three centuries and a fifty. Despite those impressive numbers, his place was never entirely secure.

Sanju Samson was later pushed back into the middle order and eventually dropped from the playing XI as Gill reclaimed the opening slot and was named vice-captain. However, Gill’s dip in form followed by injury reopened the door, allowing Samson to regain the selectors’ confidence and secure a spot in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

Competition at the top remains fierce, with Ishan Kishan also firmly in the mix after a stellar Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025, where he led Jharkhand to their maiden title and scored over 500 runs. As India prepare to defend their crown, Samson’s challenge will be to deliver consistency and intent at the top alongside Abhishek Sharma, starting with the five-match T20I series against New Zealand from January 21, before the World Cup begins on February 7.
