Sanju Samson’s struggles in the Asia Cup 2025 continued against Sri Lanka, as the Indian wicketkeeper-batter showed visible frustration after falling short of a much-needed half-century at the Dubai International Stadium. Samson, who once flourished as an explosive opener in T20Is with multiple centuries to his name, has endured a rough patch ever since Shubman Gill returned to the squad and reclaimed the top spot.

The Kerala cricketer has since been shifted to the middle order, a role where his form and rhythm appear unsettled. In fact, during the Super 4 clash against Bangladesh, Samson was pushed as low as No. 8, a position far removed from his natural game. Against Sri Lanka, however, Sanju Samson was slotted at No. 5 and looked in far better touch.

His innings of 39 from 23 balls, decorated with one four and three towering sixes, reminded fans of his striking ability. Walking in with intent, Samson played some fluent strokes and seemed set to cross fifty before an untimely dismissal cut short his promising knock.

In the 16th over, facing Dasun Shanaka, Samson attempted to loft a fuller delivery over extra cover. Unfortunately, he mistimed his shot, and Charith Asalanka showcased remarkable athleticism by backtracking and taking a reverse-cup catch above his head. Samson’s immediate reaction revealed his disappointment—he was seen yelling in frustration, knowing he had let an opportunity slip.

Former India pacer Varun Aaron, speaking on ESPNcricinfo before the game, weighed in on Samson’s batting position dilemma. According to him, India should stop experimenting with Samson’s role and permanently slot him in the middle order. “He’s not getting much batting time, and when he does, it’s often away from his natural position. If he’s going to play in the final, there’s no point batting him at No. 3 in a game like this. Samson should be trusted at the spot where he will eventually bat, probably in the middle order,” Aaron explained.

He further urged India to avoid unnecessary chopping and changing in their batting line-up ahead of the final, where they are expected to face Pakistan for the third time in the tournament. Aaron also confidently predicted an India win, stating, “It should be straightforward—India sailing through, just like they’ve done all tournament.”

Samson’s form and role remain a talking point, but his fighting knock against Sri Lanka will give India hope that he can rise to the occasion when it matters the most.
