Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson recently opened up about his deep bond with Jos Buttler and the emotional toll of parting ways with the English star. Buttler, a vital part of the Royals setup since 2018, was released ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, a decision that Samson admitted was tough for him and the entire franchise.

“IPL gives you the opportunity to play at the highest level and lead a team, but more than that, it helps you build lifelong friendships. Jos Buttler is one of my closest friends. We played together for seven years, formed a strong batting partnership, and always stayed in touch. He was like an elder brother to me,” Sanju Samson shared in an interview with JioHotstar.

During their time together, the duo built a formidable opening partnership, with Buttler playing an instrumental role in RR’s campaigns, including his Orange Cap-winning season in IPL 2022. When Samson took over the captaincy, Buttler stood by him as his deputy, offering crucial support and guidance. Losing such a valuable teammate was not easy, and Samson admitted he still struggles to come to terms with it.

“When I became captain, Jos was my vice-captain, and his experience was invaluable. Letting him go has been one of the hardest things for me. Even during the England series, I told him over dinner that I was still not over it. If I could change one thing about the IPL, it would be the rule that forces teams to release players. While the system has its advantages, on a personal level, it’s tough because you lose connections and relationships built over years,”Sanju Samson added.

Beyond just cricketing contributions, Samson emphasized Buttler’s presence as a family figure within the Rajasthan Royals camp. His departure was not only difficult for the captain but also for the franchise owners, coaching staff, and teammates, who all saw Buttler as an integral part of their journey.
“It was hard for me, for the entire franchise, the owners, the coaches—everyone associated with RR. Jos was family to us,” Sanju Samson concluded.
