Sanju Samson Points-out The Importance Of MS Dhoni

The young Indian wicket-keeper batsman, Sanju Samson made his international debut as early as 2015 but the youngster is yet to make a mark for himself in international cricket. Having made a comeback into the T20I side earlier this year, the 25-year-old is making the right moves.

Samson is looking to emulate MS Dhoni’s traits when it comes to deal with difficult situations. Stressing that Dhoni’s calmness has influenced him, Samson said he is trying to inculcate the characteristic in his game. During a chat with Times of India, Samson said, “MS Dhoni’s calmness and focus in tough situations is something that I would like to inculcate in my game as well and be calmer and more focussed while batting.”

Samson believes it’s imperative for glovemen of this generation to work on their batting skills, considering the flexibility a strong wicket-keeper batsman adds to national squads, especially in the shorter format of the games. The Kerala wicket-keeper has scored 342 runs in 12 matches including a hundred in IPL 2019 and average over 34 in first-class cricket.

Sanju Samson believes it was Adam Gilchrist and then MS Dhoni who changed the definition of modern-day wicketkeeper-batsmen.

Samson further elaborated, “Wicket-keepers today are all top batsmen as well. You look around the world, most of the ”keepers are very good batsmen. Adam Gilchrist changed the game for ‘keepers coming up the order, MS Dhoni has done likewise in the middle order. It is now almost a norm to have a wicketkeeper who is a very good top or middle-order batsman, as it helps the team add an extra bowler or all-rounder in the team.”

The youngster has played 2 T20Is for India in New Zealand earlier this year and will be part of the Indian set-up in the near future. With the race for the T20I wicket-keeper’s slot heating up in the absence of MS Dhoni, he can be one of eth prime contenders whenever the sport resumes in the country.
