Youngster Sanju Samson has been ruled out for almost five to six weeks following a blow to his right index finger during the fifth T20I against England at the Wankhede Stadium. Sanju received a blow to his right glove when Jofra Archer came up with a sharp, rising delivery that hit him two balls after he launched the first ball of the innings for a six.

Medical reports confirm Samson has sustained a fracture that rules him out of the remainder of the Ranji Trophy season. He’s now likely to return to competitive cricket at the beginning of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, when he will lead Rajasthan Royals.

“Samson has fractured his right index finger. It will take him five to six weeks before he can resume proper nets. So, there is no chance of him playing the Ranji Trophy quarter-final for Kerala (vs Jammu & Kashmir) in Pune from February 8-12. In all likelihood, his comeback will happen in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals,” a BCCI source told India TV.

Despite initial pain, Sanju Samson continued to bat briefly before getting dismissed for the fifth successive time in the series while attempting a pull shot, caught at deep square leg. He seemed to struggle with the short ball throughout the series, scoring only 51 runs from five innings.

Dhruv Jurel took over wicketkeeping responsibilities for the second innings after sustaining the injury. At least six months from now, India has scheduled its next T20I series, and Samson’s absence will not affect his prospects immediately. Still, he would be looking forward to getting into form and match fitness before the IPL 2025, for which he is going to bat for a solid statement as skipper of Rajasthan Royals.
