Sanju Samson’s omission from India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe series has sparked widespread debate, but the BCCI has clarified that the wicketkeeper-batter has been rested, not dropped. According to a PTI report quoting a senior official familiar with the selection discussions, the Zimbabwe tour is primarily aimed at giving younger players valuable international exposure.

The official explained that Samson was unlikely to feature in the playing XI even if he had travelled with the squad. Since he is already part of India’s squad for the Asian Games later this year, the selectors decided to give the experienced batter a break instead of including him in a series focused on emerging talent.
“Why is it surprising that Sanju has been rested for Zimbabwe? People who are saying this should know Sanju is in the Asian Games squad in September. So those who are criticising the selection committee can do a bit of homework. What’s the point of carrying Samson when he won’t play? He is a senior guy,” the senior BCCI source told PTI.

Samson’s absence from the three-match T20I series, which begins on July 23 in Harare, drew significant attention because it came just two days after he was left out of India’s playing XI for the second T20I against England. The back-to-back decisions led many fans to question his place in India’s white-ball plans.

Traditionally, India’s tours of Zimbabwe have been used to test promising youngsters, and this year’s squad continues that approach while also including established names like captain Shreyas Iyer and vice-captain Tilak Varma. With Samson unavailable, the opening duties are expected to be shared by Abhishek Sharma, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh, all of whom will be eager to cement their places in India’s T20I setup.
