Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has sparked fresh debate in the cricketing world by announcing he is no longer retired from Test and T20I cricket. After more than a year away from the international stage, Shakib revealed on the Beard Before Wicket podcast—hosted by Moeen Ali—that he intends to return to the Bangladesh setup and feature in all three formats before signing off with a proper farewell series.

Shakib, who had earlier declared his retirement from Tests and T20Is, clarified that he now wants to conclude his illustrious career on his own terms.

“I am officially not retired from all formats. This is the first time I’ll be revealing that. My plan is to go back to Bangladesh, play one full series of ODI, Test, and T20, and retire,” he said. He further added that the order of formats does not matter to him, as long as he gets to play an entire series and bid goodbye respectfully.

The all-rounder has not returned to Bangladesh since May 2024, following significant political upheaval that led to the removal of the Awami League government on August 5.

As a former MP of the party, Shakib’s name appeared in an FIR related to an alleged murder case, though he was outside the country at the time. Despite the turmoil, he continued playing Test cricket abroad, with his last appearance coming in Kanpur against India.

When asked about the possibility of returning home, Shakib Al Hasan sounded optimistic: “I am hopeful. That’s why I’m playing T20 leagues. I think it will happen.” His desire isn’t just to play again but to give something meaningful back to the fans who stood by him throughout his career.

Shakib Al Hasan emphasised that performance will not dictate his final series. What matters to him is signing off in front of the Bangladesh crowd. “It doesn’t matter if I play well or not. I think this is enough. It’s just a nicer way to say bye to the fans who supported me always,” he said, expressing a heartfelt wish to end his journey with a home series that celebrates his contribution to Bangladesh cricket.
