Recently, the Australian spin wizard Shane Warne did an interview with Sky Sports and commented on the possibility of Former captain Steve Smith getting the opportunity to be the team representative during the toss. Warne mentioned that even though there’s a high chance of Steve Smith being handed the captain’s armband, Warne believes he would not burden him with additional responsibility and rather have Steve focus on his batting.
Steve Smith was the Australian team captain since 2015 before being stripped off the same and being sentenced a 12-month ban his role in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Since his return to cricket, he talks about the batsman returning as captain has started to continuously grow.
“I’m sure he could captain Australia again but if I was a selector I wouldn’t. I just want Smith to bat, I don’t want him to worry about the other stuff. I just want him to bat and bat and bat. He is a leader on the field anyway and I don’t think he needs to captain,”Warne said while speaking with Sky Sports.

The Current Australia team set up has 2 captains for the different ball formats. While Tim Paine is the captain of the Australian Test team, Aaron Finch holds the responsibility to captain Australia in the limited-overs and white-ball cricket.
“I would keep Paine as captain as long as he is making runs. He has done a very good job as captain. It’s a different situation if Paine doesn’t make runs and is out of the side as then Smith comes back into calculations,” Warne said.
The current test captain Tim Paine has publicly himself backed Steve Smith to claim to the role of being the captain again but not to forget as he is the only deserving candidate for the role and the Australian spin wizard has agreed with the Australian wicket-keeper and test captain.

“But when everyone says there is no one else, it’s amazing who puts their hand up and you suddenly think ‘hang on, there might be. Will it be Travis Head? We know how good a player he can be, although he finds a way to get out all the time around 40 or 50 having done all the hard work. He does a great job captaining South Australia,” Warne added.
Warne ended by suggesting fellow fast bowler Cummins as a legitimate option, “Why couldn’t Pat Cummins do it as a bowler? I think there will be other candidates by the time Paine decides to finish,” he added.
