Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson believes that while it may be challenging for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play just one format of international cricket and still stay at the peak of their game, the two Indian stars have the class and determination to overcome any challenge. With both having retired from T20Is and Test cricket, Rohit and Kohli’s first international appearance since the Champions Trophy final in March will come during India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia, starting Sunday, October 19.

Watson, speaking on JioStar, explained how difficult it is for a player to remain sharp as a one-format cricketer, citing Shikhar Dhawan as an example — the former India opener struggled to retain his ODI spot soon after leading the side.

“For Virat and Rohit, it’s going to be a challenge playing just one format. Getting their skills sharp again to face the best bowlers will take some adjustment,” Shane Watson noted.

However, the former Aussie great was quick to emphasize that true champions always find a way back. “You can never rule out players like Virat and Rohit. They are proven match-winners. It might take them a little time to rediscover their rhythm, but once they do, they’ll be ready to take on Australia,” Shane Watson added.

India, who have remained unbeaten in ODIs in 2025, will look to continue their dominant run, though Shane Watson feels Australia have the strength to challenge that streak.

As India transitions into a new era under Shubman Gill’s ODI captaincy, all eyes will still be on Rohit and Kohli, who could be making their final appearance in Australia. “Once these two legends find their rhythm, their consistency and class will once again set the standard for world cricket,” Shane Watson concluded.
