Kolkata Knight Riders have begun their IPL 2026 campaign with a key concern hanging over their bowling plans — the availability of Sri Lankan pace sensation Matheesha Pathirana. Assistant coach Shane Watson admitted that the franchise is currently playing a “waiting game” as the young quick continues his rehabilitation.

Pathirana, who was snapped up for a hefty ₹18 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, is recovering from a calf strain and is undergoing rehab under the supervision of Sri Lanka Cricket. Earlier, head coach Abhishek Nayar had confirmed that the pacer is likely to miss the initial phase of the tournament and could only be available around mid-April.

Speaking ahead of KKR’s season opener against the Mumbai Indians, Watson made it clear that the franchise is prioritising long-term fitness over short-term gains. “With Pathirana, it’s a waiting game at the moment,” Shane Watson said, highlighting that KKR are working closely with Sri Lanka Cricket to monitor his recovery progress.

He further explained that both KKR and Sri Lanka Cricket share a common goal — ensuring Pathirana returns fully fit without risking further injury. The Australian great emphasised that despite the team’s eagerness to have him in the squad, there will be no attempt to rush his comeback.

Watson also underlined how crucial Pathirana is to KKR’s plans this season. Having been one of their top targets at the auction, the franchise sees him as a vital component of their bowling attack, especially in the death overs where his unique slingy action can make a significant impact.

“The last thing we want is for him to come back too early and break down again,”Shane Watson added, reinforcing the cautious approach being adopted by the team management.

For now, KKR will have to rely on their existing pace resources while keeping a close eye on Pathirana’s recovery timeline. If he returns fully fit, he could still play a defining role in their IPL 2026 campaign.
