With five IPL titles under their belt, the Mumbai Indians (MI) had high hopes for a successful season, especially after re-signing Hardik Pandya from the Gujarat Titans. Pandya had led the Titans to a title win in their inaugural season and a runners-up finish the following year. However, things did not go as planned for MI and Pandya this season.

They struggled to find their rhythm, managing to win only four out of the 13 matches played before their final league-stage game against the Lucknow Super Giants. Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson shared his thoughts on JioCinema, emphasizing the need for Hardik Pandya to elevate his performance in MI’s last game of the season.

Hardik Pandya’s performance this season has been underwhelming, with only 11 wickets in 11 innings at an economy rate of 10.58 runs per over, and 200 runs in 12 innings, averaging 18.18 with the bat. Watson pointed out the pressing need for Pandya to regain his form, especially with the T20 World Cup 2024 approaching.

“I have got this feeling that Hardik Pandya really needs to step up in the last game and assert his dominance. The T20 World Cup is not too far away, and he needs to get back to his best, particularly with the bat,” Shane Watson remarked during his appearance on JioCinema.

Watson expressed his disappointment with MI’s lacklustre season, considering the star-studded lineup they possess. He urged the team to deliver a memorable performance for their home fans in their final game of the season. Despite the disappointing campaign, Watson stressed that there is still much at stake, especially with a large crowd expected at the Wankhede Stadium.

“They have so much to play for. It’s been a very disappointing season for them. Given the caliber of players in their squad, they will want to put on a big show for their home fans at the Wankhede,” Shane Watson added.

As MI gears up for their final league match, all eyes will be on Hardik Pandya to see if he can deliver a performance that not only lifts his team but also sets the stage for his preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
