Punjab Kings’ middle-order batsman Shashank Singh has publicly announced Rohit Sharma as his “dream captain,” attributing the Indian legend’s great leadership qualities, support for players, and laid-back nature. Shashank, who had a breakout IPL 2024 season with Punjab Kings, appreciated Rohit’s support for his players and his relaxed nature on the field.
Shashank is especially impressed with Rohit’s individualistic approach to captaincy, which features his banter on the field that keeps the dressing room vibrant. In his opinion, this aspect helps Rohit connect strongly with his teammates. Having already shared the field with Rohit while playing for the Mumbai domestic team, Shashank gained huge respect for his leadership abilities.
Although he will be playing under Shreyas Iyer—Punjab Kings’ newly appointed captain for IPL 2025—the 33-year-old batting all-rounder admitted that his ultimate wish is to play under Rohit’s captaincy at least once in his career.

“Everyone speaks about Rohit supporting his players to the fullest and providing them with enough opportunities. He is an extremely intelligent captain, and his one-liners in the middle are funny. If there is one captain I would love to play for, it’s Rohit Sharma,” Shashank revealed in an interview with reporter Shubhankar Mishra. “He is from Bombay, and I have played with him once before. Although he was not the captain at that time, playing under his captaincy is my dream.”

Shashank’s IPL journey became an intriguing one when Punjab Kings selected him in the 2024 auction under quite strange circumstances. It is said that the franchise inadvertently bid for him, confusing him with another Shashank playing for another franchise in the speeded-up round. Punjab Kings, however, later confirmed that Shashank was always under their consideration list. He ultimately signed up for his base price of INR 20 lakh.

Despite the uncertainty, Shashank proved to be one of the top performers of Punjab Kings in IPL 2024, remaining their top run-scorer. In 14 games, he scored 354 runs with a brilliant average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 164.65 that was nothing short of explosive. His consistency made Punjab Kings decide to retain him before the 2025 auction, signing his services for INR 5.50 crore—a reflection of the faith that he has been able to instill within the franchise.
