Ahead of the recently concluded ODI series between India and West Indies, not many of the fan would’ve expected a hard-fought contest from the visiting team, but the difference in the quality of sides was very minimal in the first three matches, to say the least. For the Windies, Shai Hope and youngster Shimron Hetmyer were the only players who left an impact and brought their teams on level terms with the mighty Men in Blue.
After scoring a century in the first ODI, Shimron chipped in with a fifty in the second and followed it up with another quickfire 39 in the third. The final two encounters in Mumbai and Trivandrum didn’t turn out to be memorable for him as well as for his teammates.
During a recent chat with the Hindu, Hetmyer revealed his dream of playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). After watching his breathtaking strokeplay, a lot of franchises must’ve already taken him into consideration for the upcoming auction, which is going to take place next month. A young foreign talent like him who can play spin well is always a bonus and it will be a huge surprise if he finds no buyers.

Talking about the same, Hetmyer said, “It feels good to know that one of India’s greatest spinners rates me highly. It is a dream of mine to play in the IPL. But for now, my focus is on representing the West Indies the best I can. If rewards come down the road, then so be it.”
In the last decade or so, a plethora of Caribbean cricketers have started prioritizing T20 leagues over International cricket. Despite expressing his long-term affection for the richest T20 league in the world, Hetmyer feels that representing his national team will always be a top priority. He also added that International cricket is the highest anyone can reach as a cricketer.
The southpaw explained, “All young cricketers back home aspire to play in the IPL. But first and foremost, the priority should be to represent the West Indies, because that is the highest level you can reach as a cricketer.”
