India tightened their grip on the first T20I against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club as all-rounder Shivam Dube delivered a crucial breakthrough with the ball. After opting to bat first, Zimbabwe found themselves under immense pressure early in the innings, slipping to 32/4 as India’s disciplined bowling attack continued to dominate.

Captain Shreyas Iyer made a smart tactical move by introducing Dube into the attack in the eighth over, and the decision paid immediate dividends. On just his second delivery, Dube dismissed Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza, dealing a massive blow to the hosts.

The wicket came from a back-of-a-length delivery that Raza attempted to pull over the leg side. However, he failed to time the shot, with the ball taking the higher part of the bat before ballooning towards deep square leg. Substitute fielder Suryansh Shedge completed a comfortable catch, leaving the Zimbabwe skipper disappointed after scoring just four runs from seven deliveries.

Raza’s dismissal further deepened Zimbabwe’s batting collapse as India maintained complete control of the contest. Dube’s breakthrough also justified Iyer’s decision to rotate his bowlers and use the seam-bowling all-rounder during a crucial phase of the innings.

The wicket will also boost Dube’s confidence after a below-par T20I series against England. The left-handed all-rounder managed only 85 runs in five matches at an average of 21.25 and a strike rate of 130.76. With the ball, he claimed two wickets but struggled for control, conceding runs at an economy rate of 15.66.

Former India batter Hanuma Vihari recently said the team would expect Dube to make a greater impact during the Zimbabwe tour, particularly with the bat.

“In terms of performance, Dube is another player who has not created an impact with the bat. They will expect more from him with the bat,” Vihari said on his YouTube channel.

With senior all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy unavailable for the series, Dube has been entrusted with greater responsibility in both departments. The absence of Axar Patel has further increased his importance, making him a key figure in providing balance to India’s playing XI as they look to begin the Zimbabwe series with a convincing victory.
