In the high-stakes IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 1, both captains—Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians and Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings—were penalised for slow over rates. The contest, already delayed by rain, saw both sides struggle to maintain the required pace, prompting fines from the league authorities.

Rain caused a delayed toss and a late start to the game. Fortunately, the extended cut-off time allowed the match to be played in full, with no overs lost. However, the over-rate issues persisted, leading to disciplinary consequences for both teams. For MI, this was their third slow over rate offence of the season, while it was PBKS’s second.

As per IPL’s code of conduct, the penalties varied accordingly. Hardik Pandya was fined ₹30 lakh, with the rest of the MI playing XI penalised either 50% of their match fee or ₹12 lakh—whichever was lesser. On the other side, Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹24 lakh, while his teammates were docked 25% of their match fee or ₹6 lakh, whichever was lower.

Interestingly, due to a recent amendment in IPL’s disciplinary rules, repeat offenders of slow over rates no longer face automatic suspensions. In IPL 2024, Pandya had served a one-match ban for a similar infraction, forcing him to miss MI’s season opener in IPL 2025 against CSK. That suspension clause has now been scrapped.

However, Pandya hasn’t walked away scot-free—the ICC’s Code of Conduct has handed him two demerit points. Under the revised rule, these points remain on record for 36 months. If further violations occur within this period, it could lead to harsher penalties, keeping both Pandya and MI on notice going forward.
