India’s fielding concerns resurfaced in the second T20I against New Zealand on Saturday, October 24, after captain Shreyas Iyer dropped a straightforward catch to give Bevon Jacobs a crucial lifeline at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The missed opportunity proved costly as the New Zealand batter went on to score a half-century and helped the hosts recover after losing three early wickets.

The incident occurred during the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings, with the scoreboard reading 71/3. Fast bowler Prince Yadav delivered a hard-length ball around middle and off stump, forcing Jacobs to attempt a flat-batted shot down the ground. The mistimed stroke came off the lower half of the bat and travelled towards Iyer at mid-off.

The Indian captain appeared well-positioned to complete the catch at waist height, but the ball slipped through his hands as he attempted to collect it. Iyer made a desperate second effort to grab the rebound, only for the ball to fall safely onto the ground. A video of the dropped catch, shared by Sony Sports Network, quickly attracted attention. Prince Yadav was visibly disappointed by the missed opportunity, while Jacobs, who was batting on 20 at the time, made India pay for the error.

After surviving the dropped catch, Jacobs capitalised on the opportunity and reached a valuable half-century. He joined Glenn Phillips in rebuilding the innings, with the pair putting together a crucial century partnership during the middle overs.

Phillips led the counterattack with an impressive 70 off 43 deliveries, striking four boundaries and four sixes. His aggressive approach, combined with Jacobs’ contribution, helped New Zealand regain momentum after India’s early breakthroughs.

India had made an encouraging start after Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Tim Seifert for seven, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Daryl Mitchell for six to claim his first international wicket in nearly four years.

Prince Yadav then bowled Finn Allen for 16, leaving New Zealand struggling at 41/3 inside the powerplay. However, the partnership between Phillips and Jacobs shifted the momentum. India’s inability to capitalise on the dropped catch highlighted the importance of fielding discipline as the hosts fought back to push their total beyond 160.
