Punjab Kings continue to slide deeper into trouble in IPL 2026, and the struggles of captain Shreyas Iyer are now mirroring the team’s dramatic collapse in form. What once looked like a promising campaign has quickly turned into a nightmare, with PBKS suffering five consecutive defeats heading into their crucial clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.

With Punjab desperately needing a captain’s knock in a must-win game, Iyer once again failed to deliver under pressure. The PBKS skipper managed just one run off three deliveries before falling cheaply to uncapped RCB pacer Rasikh Salam in the fourth over of the chase. Trying to force the pace early, Iyer edged behind, where stand-in RCB captain Jitesh Sharma completed a simple catch behind the stumps.
The dismissal further extended Iyer’s disappointing run with the bat in recent matches. After starting IPL 2026 strongly, the middle-order batter has struggled badly for rhythm during Punjab’s losing streak. His scores in the last six innings now read: 1 against RCB, 4 versus Mumbai Indians, 59* against Delhi Capitals, 5 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, 19 against Gujarat Titans, and 30 against Rajasthan Royals.

Ironically, the disappointing outing came in Iyer’s landmark 100th IPL match as captain. Having previously led Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, Iyer joined an elite group of captains featuring MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Gautam Gambhir in terms of leadership longevity and win percentage.
Earlier in the match, RCB’s batting unit completely dominated the Punjab bowling attack. Kohli continued his sensational form with another classy half-century after his recent century against KKR. Devdutt Padikkal added valuable runs at the top, while Venkatesh Iyer stole the spotlight with a blistering unbeaten 73 off 40 balls. Tim David also provided a late flourish with a quickfire 28 off just 12 deliveries as RCB posted a massive 222/4.
Punjab’s bowling lacked control throughout the innings. Lockie Ferguson endured a tough outing, conceding 43 runs in three overs without a wicket, while Yuzvendra Chahal leaked runs despite dismissing Kohli. With their playoff hopes fading rapidly, PBKS now face an uphill battle to revive their season.
