India captain Shreyas Iyer praised his batters after the Men in Blue pulled off an impressive chase of 226 runs against New Zealand in the opening T20I in Christchurch. Explosive performances from Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Iyer and Naman Dhir helped India begin the series on a winning note, showcasing their batting depth in challenging overseas conditions. Although the pitch initially appeared slow, Iyer observed that it became flatter as the match progressed, making stroke play easier for both teams.

India capitalised on the improved conditions with an aggressive approach that put New Zealand’s bowling attack under immediate pressure. India’s experienced opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided the foundation for the successful run chase. The duo added 93 runs for the first wicket, taking full advantage of the powerplay and putting India firmly in control of the required run rate.

Samson was named Player of the Match for his blistering 67 off just 33 deliveries, while Abhishek contributed 29 runs from 12 balls. Their attacking partnership proved crucial in a chase that demanded an exceptional start.

Speaking after the match, Shreyas Iyer highlighted the importance of making early inroads into a target of more than 220 runs. “Obviously we needed that kind of start, especially when you’re chasing 220, getting to 80-85 in six overs, that’s a tremendous start,” Iyer said.

The decision to back Samson and Abhishek at the top of the order paid off. Despite Samson experiencing inconsistent form during the preceding series against the West Indies, both openers found their rhythm simultaneously, putting New Zealand under enormous pressure.

Shreyas Iyer, who scored 42 off 28 balls, emphasised that experienced batters understand how to approach demanding run chases without needing detailed instructions from the team management. “Yeah, they’re absolutely experienced enough. You don’t have to tell them how to go about their business. They know exactly what they’re doing, and once they get going, it’s just about the momentum they carry forward,” the Indian captain explained.

He added that such performances do not happen in every match, but when the opening combination clicks, it gives the middle order a platform to finish the contest.

Naman Dhir emerged as another major positive for India, contributing with both ball and bat. After delivering useful overs during New Zealand’s innings, he played a decisive role in the chase with an unbeaten 42 off just 15 deliveries, helping India cross the finish line.

Shreyas Iyer praised Dhir’s composure and highlighted his value as a T20 specialist who offers flexibility with the ball, particularly against left-handed batters. “Coming in and bowling those two-three crucial overs actually can change the momentum,” Iyer said, while also applauding Dhir’s calm approach under pressure.

India’s successful chase demonstrated the importance of aggressive opening partnerships, adaptable middle-order batting and valuable all-round options as the team looks to build momentum in the series against New Zealand.
