India’s newly appointed T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer, has lauded the country’s athletes for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with special praise reserved for the Indian boxing contingent after its record-breaking campaign.

India enjoyed its most successful Commonwealth Games boxing campaign, finishing at the top of the medals table in the sport with an unprecedented haul of seven gold and three silver medals. The remarkable achievement underlined the country’s growing dominance in international boxing and played a key role in India’s impressive overall performance at the Games.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Iyer congratulated the athletes for making the nation proud.

India’s women boxers led the historic campaign by winning five gold medals. World champion Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Asian Games medallist Preeti Pawar (54kg), Asian champion Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), and Arundhati Choudhary (70kg) all finished atop the podium. On the men’s side, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal added two more gold medals, while Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain settled for silver in the 75kg category.

India concluded the Commonwealth Games with an impressive tally of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. Meanwhile, Iyer has endured a challenging start as India’s T20I captain. His side lost series against Ireland and England before bouncing back strongly with a series victory over Zimbabwe, providing an encouraging response ahead of the team’s upcoming assignments.
