Indian batter Shreyas Iyer broke his silence on Thursday (October 30), sharing a heartfelt update about his health following the near-fatal spleen injury he suffered during the India vs Australia ODI series. The injury occurred when Iyer took a stunning diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the third ODI but landed awkwardly, rolling over the ball in the process.

The moment looked painful, and Shreyas Iyer was visibly in discomfort as he was helped off the field. Reports suggest that his condition deteriorated rapidly — his vitals dropped, and he was almost fainting by the time he reached the dressing room. He was immediately rushed to a Sydney hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Doctors performed an interventional trans-catheter embolisation to control severe internal bleeding. Thankfully, after a tense 48 hours, Shreyas Iyer was moved out of the ICU and has since shown steady improvement.

In his first public message since the incident, Shreyas Iyer took to Instagram to express his gratitude: “I’m currently in recovery and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful for all the kind wishes and support I’ve received — it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts.”

According to medical experts, Iyer’s recovery is expected to take around two months, ruling him out of India’s three-match ODI series against South Africa in November-December. His availability for the New Zealand series in January 2026 remains uncertain.
The BCCI confirmed that both Indian and Australian specialists collaborated closely on his treatment. The Indian team doctor stayed with Shreyas Iyer in Sydney even after the rest of the squad returned home.
