The Indian middle-order batter, Shreyas Iyer witnessed a purple patch in his career in 2022 as he was India’s leading run-getter and wants to extend such a phase in his career with more consistent match-winning performances for Team India in the new season. Notably, Iyer broke the hegemony of India’s leading batters, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, by becoming the highest international run-getter for Team India.

Shreyas Iyer amassed as many as 1,609 runs at an average of 48.75 with one century and 14 half-centuries. He scored 422 runs in eight innings at an average of 60.28 in five Tests in 2022, with four half-centuries, and also scored 724 runs at an average of 55.69 in 17 ODIs.

Iyer added that he used to plan his innings, became less flamboyant with his shot selection, and always tried to play according to the situation in 2022. In fact, Iyer was the third-highest run-getter in international cricket last year.

Talking to the broadcasters ahead of the opening game of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in Guwhati, Shreyas Iyer said, “It (2022) was an exciting year for me and I was ecstatic about my performances. I definitely look back at what I learned from last year. I was less flamboyant with my shot selection, I was patient, that’s what stands out.”

He further added, “I used to plan my innings, that’s what I analysed from the last year. I tried to play according to the situation, and it worked for me. Need to study the bowlers, I try to visualise the bowlers, I try to analyse these small things and let my instincts take over once I enter the ground.”

Iyer acknowledged the fact that pressure is inevitable when someone plays for the national team, but said that he always focuses on the routine and process.
