In the first ODI between India and England in Nagpur, the guests got off to a flying start only to lose their first wicket in an unexpected way. The visitors were scoring at a brisk rate, putting away 71 runs in just eight overs at a run rate of nearly nine. However, a slight misjudgment cost Phil Salt his wicket, as he was run out after a fantastic direct hit from Shreyas Iyer.

It happened in the ninth over of England’s innings when Hardik Pandya was bowling. Salt took a shot towards point on the fifth delivery and immediately went for a sharp single. He and Ben Duckett easily completed two runs, but Salt wanted to use the fast outfield so went for a very risky third. However, Duckett had no intention of taking the extra run and stopped after a couple of steps.

When Phil Salt realized his mistake, he was already halfway down the pitch. Shreyas Iyer, near the boundary, wasted no time and unleashed a rocket throw straight to the keeper. The ball crashed into the stumps, leaving Salt well short of his crease. The first wicket to fall came for England at 75 runs while still cruising at a strong run rate. Salt’s promising knock went in vain since he miscalculated the run.

Before this match, Salt had played 25 ODI innings, scoring 866 runs. This was his first ODI against India, and he made an immediate impact by scoring a quickfire 43 off 26 balls. His aggressive start set the tone for England, but his run-out handed India a crucial breakthrough.
