Shreyas Iyer has long been one of India’s most reliable number 4 batters in ODI cricket, and his performances in recent times have further solidified his reputation. He was a key figure in India’s run to the final of the 2023 World Cup, amassing over 500 runs throughout the tournament. With the Champions Trophy just around the corner, Iyer’s form remains strong, having already made a quickfire fifty in Nagpur and looking set for another one in Cuttack.

However, his promising innings came to an unfortunate end due to a miscommunication with his batting partner. The dismissal came on the final ball of the 37th over, as Adil Rashid bowled a full delivery on the middle stump. Axar Patel, who was at the non-striker’s end, played the ball towards the leg side and initially took a couple of steps forward.

However, Axar stopped midway after seeing the ball heading toward the fielder, leaving Shreyas in a difficult position. By the time Iyer realized that Axar wasn’t running, he was already halfway down the track, and it was too late for him to get back.

As Shreyas tried to return to the crease, Jos Buttler was quick to collect the ball and throw it to the bowler’s end. Adil Rashid was there to gather the throw and remove the bails, sending Iyer back to the pavilion. It was a frustrating moment for the Indian number four, who had been playing well. The disappointment was visible on both his and Axar’s faces, as they both realized the unfortunate nature of the mix-up.

Although the wicket provided some hope for England, India remained in a strong position, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s brilliant century earlier in the innings. England had posted 304 in their innings, with Ben Duckett and Joe Root playing key knocks. With India leading the series, a win in Cuttack would give them an unassailable lead, leaving just one more game to go.
