India skipper Shubman Gill was involved in a dramatic on-field collision with West Indies wicket-keeper Tevin Imlach during Day 1 of the second Test at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Friday. The incident occurred in the 85th over and momentarily brought play to a halt, raising concerns among fans and commentators alike. The collision happened as Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal attempted a quick single.

Yashasvi Jaiswal had flicked a full delivery from Anderson Phillip towards mid-wicket, prompting the running. Jayden Seales, stationed at mid-on, threw the ball towards the stumps, but the delivery was slightly off target. In trying to collect the throw, Imlach moved to his left, and Gill, sprinting towards the batting crease, accidentally collided with the West Indies keeper. Both players fell to the ground, visibly shaken by the impact.

Medical teams from both sides rushed onto the field to assess the players. Concussion checks and precautionary evaluations were conducted immediately. Gill quickly removed his helmet, clearly stunned by the collision, while Imlach appeared to clutch his arm. Despite the tense moment, both players were declared fit to continue after treatment, averting what could have been a serious injury.

The incident highlighted the intensity and quick pace of the game. Jaiswal’s sharp flick and Seales’ mid-on throw had created a situation where split-second decisions turned potentially routine runs into a high-risk moment. Adding a touch of levity, Jaiswal asked Gill, “How many fingers?” following the collision, a gesture that lightened the tense atmosphere.

Gill, unscathed after the collision, resumed his innings, demonstrating resilience and focus under pressure. The moment served as a reminder of the risks players face in Test cricket, even during seemingly simple singles, and the importance of immediate medical support on the field. India continued their innings with both openers safely back on the crease, maintaining momentum in their pursuit of a commanding first-innings total.
