Team India will look to put a disappointing T20I tour firmly behind them when they take on England in the opening ODI at Edgbaston on Tuesday, July 14. After suffering back-to-back T20I series defeats to Ireland and England, the Men in Blue are eager to make a fresh start in the 50-over format under ODI captain Shubman Gill.

India enter the series on the back of six defeats in their last seven completed matches, with the only other fixture ending in a washout. However, Gill believes the team’s recent struggles in T20 cricket will have no bearing on its ODI performances. Speaking ahead of the series opener in Birmingham, the India skipper stressed that the two white-ball formats demand completely different approaches.

“I don’t think there will be any impact of the T20 series on this one. This is a different format, and the team knows what it has to achieve. It’s a different format and a different atmosphere,” Shubman Gill said.

The statistics also support his optimism. England entered the recent T20I series as one of the world’s strongest sides and showcased their dominance by posting massive totals, including 257 runs in 20 overs at Southampton. ODI cricket, however, presents a different challenge, with England currently ranked significantly lower than they are in the shortest format.

India will also be strengthened by the return of several experienced campaigners. Jasprit Bumrah is back after being rested for the T20I leg of the tour, while senior batters Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul return to bolster the batting lineup alongside Gill.

Eight players from the T20I squad are also part of the ODI setup, including Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav.

While some endured difficult outings during the T20I series, the ODI format offers them an opportunity to reset and contribute in conditions better suited to their strengths. With a more experienced squad and the return of several key players, India will be hoping to begin the three-match ODI series with a much-needed victory and restore confidence ahead of a crucial phase of the international calendar.
