India’s injury woes have deepened ahead of the crucial fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, with pacer Akash Deep officially ruled out due to a groin injury. Captain Shubman Gill confirmed the setback during the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, July 22, adding to the growing list of absentees that already includes all-rounder Nitish Reddy and left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh. With the series finely poised, India faces a tricky selection dilemma.

Among the few bright spots amidst this crisis is the return of Rishabh Pant, who is now fit and ready to don the gloves again. Pant’s inclusion offers India a significant boost — not just in terms of wicketkeeping but also the balance of their playing XI.

With Pant back behind the stumps, the team is now free to use the spot previously occupied by Dhruv Jurel to strengthen another department — whether it be adding an extra batter, bowler, or all-rounder. Shubman Gill also revealed that Anshul Kamboj, the uncapped seamer who impressed in India A’s matches against England Lions, is firmly in contention for a Test debut.

Anshul Kamboj, who was initially sent back after the A tour, has rejoined the squad in Manchester and is in a direct contest with Prasidh Krishna for the third seamer’s slot. Prasidh, who featured in the first two Tests, failed to make a notable impact, opening the door for a potential debutant.

“Nitish is out for the series, and both Akash and Arshdeep won’t be available for the fourth Test,” Shubman Gill said. “Anshul Kamboj has been around, he understands our plans and is ready. We’ve seen enough of him to know he can win matches. He’s very close to getting his cap. The final call will be taken before the toss.”

India now looks to reshuffle once again, with Gill stressing the importance of taking 20 wickets — no matter the combination.
