India captain Shubman Gill suffered a minor thumb injury during a training session in Colombo on Thursday, raising fresh fitness concerns ahead of the team’s three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka A. The incident comes at a time when injuries have already disrupted India’s preparations for the crucial two-Test series.

Gill, who travelled to Sri Lanka with the squad earlier this week, was struck on the thumb while batting in the nets during India’s final practice session before the warm-up fixture. According to multiple reports, the 25-year-old immediately received treatment from the team medical staff before returning to continue his batting session, suggesting the injury is not considered serious.

Even so, the scare adds to India’s growing injury list ahead of an important World Test Championship assignment.

The visitors have already been forced to make multiple changes to their plans. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a knee injury, resulting in Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi earning his maiden Test call-up. All-rounder Washington Sundar is also expected to miss the opening Test after sustaining a hamstring injury during the recent ODI series against England.

Meanwhile, top-order batter Sai Sudharsan remains doubtful for the series opener as he continues to recover from a toe injury at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Earlier, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana were also sidelined due to injuries, further testing India’s squad depth.

Despite the fitness setbacks, India’s focus now shifts to the three-day practice match against a Sri Lanka XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo. The game will provide valuable red-ball preparation before the first Test, which begins in Galle on August 15.

A key objective for the Indian batting unit will be improving its performance against quality spin. India’s struggles against spin bowling were exposed during recent home series against New Zealand and South Africa, and similar conditions in Sri Lanka are expected to present another stern examination. The warm-up fixture will therefore play a crucial role in helping the visitors fine-tune their approach before the Test series begins.
