India captain Shubman Gill suffered an injury scare during a net session on Friday, September 25, ahead of the upcoming ODI series against West Indies. According to Cricbuzz, the right-handed batter was struck on the elbow by a delivery from fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and subsequently left the session to receive treatment from the team physiotherapist.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had not issued an official update on Gill’s injury at the time of writing. With the first ODI scheduled for Sunday, further clarity is expected during India’s press conference on Saturday.
If Gill is unable to take part in the series opener, India have Yashasvi Jaiswal as a potential replacement at the top of the order. Jaiswal is part of the squad and could partner Rohit Sharma if the captain is ruled out. KL Rahul has been named India’s vice-captain for the ODI series in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is leading the T20I team at the Asian Games during the same period.

Gill’s latest setback comes after a series of injury and fitness-related interruptions over the past few years. He was first sidelined during the 2023 ODI World Cup after contracting dengue fever. A thumb injury later affected his availability during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Further problems followed in 2025 and 2026. Gill suffered a neck injury while batting against South Africa and required medical observation and rehabilitation. He subsequently dealt with a toe injury and later experienced neck stiffness during the 2026 IPL season.
More recently, Gill retired hurt after suffering severe leg cramps against England in July 2026. A finger injury during training also prevented him from featuring in a warm-up game before India’s Test series against Sri Lanka in August.

The latest elbow injury will therefore be closely monitored by the Indian team management ahead of the West Indies ODIs. Gill has previously been involved in discussions around player workload, recovery time and preparation when switching between formats, making injury management an important issue for the India captain.
