Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that maximizing the powerplay is a top priority for his team in IPL 2025. Reflecting on their underwhelming performance last season, where they posted the lowest powerplay run rate of 7.72, Gill acknowledged that the team’s struggles in the first six overs had a significant impact on their overall campaign. His own strike rate of 131.08 and that of his opening partner Sai Sudharsan’s 115.49 underscored the need for a more aggressive approach, especially in his debut season as captain, which saw the Titans finish eighth.

Speaking candidly at the GT press conference on March 19, Gill took accountability for not being able to set the pace early on, admitting that the team failed to play their desired brand of cricket during the powerplay and beyond.
“The plan is to score as many runs as possible and lose as few wickets as possible. We couldn’t execute that in the powerplay last season, and it reflected in our results. Not qualifying for the playoffs was tough, and as a captain, it’s my responsibility to lead from the front and rectify that,” Shubman Gill remarked.

Despite his desire to maximize powerplay scoring, the 25-year-old skipper stressed the importance of reading conditions before taking risks. He emphasized that the Titans won’t recklessly chase big scores but will adapt to the situation.

“We aren’t aiming to hit 300 every game. If the conditions favor a 240-250 total, we’ll go for it. But if it’s a track where 150-160 is competitive, we need to recognize that and play accordingly,” Shubman Gill explained.

Shubman Gill believes that the hallmark of a strong team is adaptability. He acknowledged that rigidly pursuing an aggressive approach could backfire, and finding a balance between aggression and caution is crucial. “If we stick to playing just one way, we won’t adapt, and that’s not what great teams do. We aim to be smarter this season and adjust to the conditions and challenges thrown at us,” he concluded.
With a sharper focus on the powerplay and a flexible mindset, Gill hopes to guide Gujarat Titans to a more successful IPL 2025 campaign.
