India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill has found himself under the spotlight after reportedly missing a crucial practice session ahead of the second ODI in the ongoing three-match series against Australia. Following India’s seven-wicket defeat in the opener, Gill joined an unfortunate list of Indian skippers — including Virat Kohli — who lost their debut matches as captain in all three formats: T20Is, ODIs, and Tests.

The 26-year-old, who has been hailed as the future of Indian cricket, now faces mounting pressure to guide his side back into contention in Adelaide. Shubman Gill’s record against Australia in ODIs has been modest so far. In nine appearances, he has scored 290 runs at an average of 32.22 and a strike rate of 91.48, with just one century and one fifty. His struggles continued in the first ODI in Perth, where he managed only 10 runs off 18 balls before falling early.
According to a RevSportz report by journalist Rohit Juglan, Shubman Gill’s absence from two consecutive training sessions raised eyebrows, as he is known for his disciplined work ethic. “Gill was not there. It’s very rare to see him miss two sessions in a row. These were optional, but he usually never skips even those,” Juglan remarked, emphasizing how unusual this was for the young captain.

However, on Tuesday, Shubman Gill was seen back in action, working intensely with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. The focus of his net session was clear — refining his footwork and improving his response to short-of-length deliveries.

The Punjab-born batter concentrated on playing punch drives, compact pulls, and finding gaps for singles and boundaries. He even simulated real-game scenarios, practising the tempo shifts required for powerplays, middle-overs consolidation, and strike rotation under pressure — all aimed at sharpening his readiness for the upcoming clash.

Gill’s captaincy journey has been challenging so far. After losing his T20I debut as captain against Zimbabwe in July 2024 and his Test captaincy debut against England at Headingley, the young skipper is yet to taste victory as India’s full-time leader. With two ODIs remaining in the series, Gill will be eager to reverse his fortunes — both as a batter and a captain. Despite recent setbacks, his overall ODI record remains stellar: 2,785 runs in 56 matches at an average of 58.02, including eight centuries and 15 fifties, highlighted by a double hundred against New Zealand.
