Shubman Gill provided a robust statement with the bat after a lean patch in Test cricket, playing out a fluent 87-run knock in the first ODI against England on February 6. Walking in at a tricky situation after India lost early wickets, Gill joined forces with Shreyas Iyer and managed to build a game-changing partnership that steadied the innings and set up a comfortable chase for the hosts.

The composed yet aggressive innings not only secured India’s victory but also reaffirmed his prowess in the limited-overs format. Interestingly, Gill was pushed down the order to No. 3, a role usually occupied by Virat Kohli, who missed the match due to a knee issue.

Despite the positional shift, the 24-year-old adapted seamlessly, showing maturity beyond his years. His efforts earned him the Player of the Match award, providing him a much-needed confidence boost ahead of major tournaments like the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Spending considerable time at the dressing rooms with stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Gill found some fine insights into the contrasting approaches each of them deploys at the crease.

“Everyone has different qualities. Virat bhai is more aggressive and instinctive—whatever he feels, he acts on it immediately. Rohit bhai, on the other hand, is more measured in his approach. He gives the current plan a little more time before deciding to change it,” Shubman Gill revealed in a conversation with Star Sports.

Another key figure in India’s batting setup is all-rounder Hardik Pandya, known for his fearless style of play. Gill acknowledged Pandya’s impact, both as a power-hitter and as a motivator within the squad.

“Hardik bhai has immense confidence—he’s flamboyant and always looks to dominate the opposition. He constantly pushes us to take control and not let the other team gain an advantage. I’ve learned a lot from all three of them,” he added. Further, having rediscovered his form and gaining valuable experience from India’s seasoned campaigners, this young lad’s role in the team looks all the more vital as India readies itself for the rest of the global tournaments.
