Shubman Gill has looked in for a tough outing with the bat in the ongoing third ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. With Sri Lanka setting a strong target—posting the highest score of the series, India needed a solid start by openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
Aggressive from the very start of the innings, Rohit Sharma continued to carry on his good form from the first two matches when he scored fifties. He dominated through early overs, scoring at a brisk pace as Shubman Gill played the supporting role.
India ran away with 35 runs in just four overs as Rohit made 31 off 13 balls. On the other hand, Gill could only manage 4 runs off 11 balls and was getting frustrated for he could not quite get going. Fifth over, looking to break out, he found only an opening for the Sri Lankan outfit.

Shubman Gill advanced down at the third ball in the over bowled by Asitha Fernando, looking to sledgehammer it out of the ground, swung hard, but the ball stayed low and hit his leg stump. He went for 6 runs off 14 balls, effectively a disappointing end to the series without a single fifty.

Dunith Wellalage secured a big breakthrough, which was that of Rohit Sharma for 35 off the eighth over.

Avishka Fernando batted brilliantly for 96, and on his behalf, Kusal Mendis contributed significantly with 59 as well. For India, the debutant Riyan Parag showed some brilliance with the ball, returning figures of 3 for 54, and did a great job of arresting Sri Lanka’s progress and keeping India in the game.
