The young Indian opener, Shubman Gill recalled his learnings from India A and under-19 tours of England ahead of the much-awaited ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand, which is scheduled to commence on June 18 at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. He asserted that intent to score runs should never take a back seat adding that at times one has to leave the loose balls in order to survive in England.

Shubman Gill has put forward his case for the selection in the playing XI in the WTC final with a polished knock of 85 during the Indian team’s intra-squad match simulation over the last couple of days.

Describing the same during a Star Sports show Cricket Connected, Shubman Gill said, “When I toured England with India A and the Under-19 team, everyone asked me to play a certain number of balls if I wanted to score runs. But I feel, your intent to score runs should never go on the back seat and you should look to survive.”

He further added, “When you are looking to score runs, the bowlers get to the back foot and you can put some pressure on the bowler. If you are just looking to survive, you tend to get more good balls than you should be getting. I think, at times to survive in England you have to leave the loose balls. So, that was my learning from the India A and Under-19 tour.”

Gill is going to be one of the crucial batsmen for India as they head to England for a long tour which comprises the World Test Championship final against New Zealand and 5 Tests against England. Shubman Gill made his Test debut in Australia earlier this year and made an instant impact. His counter-attacking 91 in the 4th and final Test against Australia helped set up India’s heroic victory.
