Shubman Gill, who travelled with the Indian squad as a reserve player for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, will be making an early exit from the tournament. One of the media reports indicates that Gill will likely be appointed as the Indain skipper for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour, which is scheduled shortly after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Joining Shubman Gill on the tour will be Avesh Khan, who also returned to India alongside him. Khan, who witnessed a phenomenal outing with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, has impressed the selectors with his performances. His inclusion in the squad underscores the selectors’ strategy to field a squad of young players for the five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe, allowing senior players to rest.

According to the Indian Express, Abhishek Sharma, another standout performer from the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), is expected to make his international debut. This opens up the possibility of Sharma partnering with Gill to open the innings, given their camaraderie and experience playing together for Punjab.

The tour will also see VVS Laxman, chief of the National Cricket Academy, stepping in as the head coach. This interim arrangement is in place until the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finalizes the new head coach to succeed Rahul Dravid.

Gautam Gambhir is reportedly in line to take over the coaching duties, starting with the Sri Lankan tour on July 26. Several young players who shone in the IPL are expected to feature in the squad for the Zimbabwe tour. Rajasthan Royals’ all-rounder Riyan Parag, who scored 573 runs batting primarily at number four, is among the prominent names.
