After scripting a monumental innings of 269 runs against England at Edgbaston, Indian skipper Shubman Gill shared a heartwarming—and slightly humorous—reaction from his father that summed up both pride and typical parental expectation. Gill’s patient yet commanding knock came off 387 balls, featuring 30 boundaries and three sixes, steering India to a dominant first-innings score of 587.

Following the action-packed Day 2, the BCCI released a video on Instagram capturing Gill’s response to congratulatory messages from his parents. His father, who has been a driving force behind his cricketing journey since his childhood, was full of praise for the fluent innings.

“Well played, I enjoyed watching your batting, and my heart was at peace. You were batting like in your U-16 and U-19 days — I felt very proud,” said Shubman Gill’s father in a voice note. His mother added a simple yet touching, “Felt amazing watching you bat, keep going, God bless you.”

However, the most amusing part came when Gill revealed his father’s cheeky postscript. “He also told me I missed my triple century,” Gill chuckled in the video. “It means a lot coming from him. Hopefully, we’ll end this match on a great note.”

Gill went on to say that when it comes to feedback on his game, there are only two voices that matter to him—his father and his best friend. While he didn’t name the latter directly, it’s widely believed to be fellow cricketer Abhishek Sharma, his close companion and teammate from their junior days, who now features prominently in India’s T20I setup.

“This message means a lot to me. Growing up, I played almost all of my cricket for my dad. And besides him, the only person I listen to about my cricket is my best friend,” Shubman Gill said, reflecting on the emotional grounding that anchors his soaring career.

With the bat already doing the talking, all eyes will now be on Gill’s captaincy as India aim to press home the advantage in this high-stakes Test series. His leadership will be tested, but if his composure at the crease is anything to go by, India are in firm hands.
