The 19th match of IPL 2025 has been anything but smooth sailing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. After a disappointing effort with the bat that saw them crawl to 152, they looked momentarily back in the contest with two early breakthroughs in the powerplay. But then came Washington Sundar — and with him, a brutal assault that nearly put the game to bed.

Walking in with the match still in the balance, Sundar took charge of the chase with a flurry of strokes. He played with freedom, punishing anything short or full, and tilted the momentum firmly in Gujarat Titans’ favour. A well-deserved half-century seemed within reach, but in the 14th over, just as he looked set to finish the game, Mohammed Shami struck — with a little help from a contentious catch by Aniket Verma.

The low, diving effort from Verma was sent upstairs and sparked debate, with both Washington and GT skipper Shubman Gill visibly unhappy. The replays were inconclusive, showing no clear evidence of fingers under the ball, but the third umpire ruled it out — a decision that didn’t sit well with the batting side.

Earlier, SRH’s batting effort left much to be desired. Despite a 17-run over that helped them cross 150, the innings never really took off. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma departed early, and Nitish Reddy struggled for fluency. Klaasen showed glimpses but couldn’t capitalize. It was down to cameos from Aniket Verma and skipper Pat Cummins that helped SRH post something respectable.

GT’s bowlers were disciplined, with Sai Kishore and Prasidh Krishna doing well. But the star of the night was undoubtedly Mohammed Siraj. Back at his home ground, he struck twice in the powerplay and later added two more to return with career-best IPL figures, giving GT a strong grip on the match.
