Chasing an enormous target of 515 runs, Bangladesh got off to a promising start in their second innings, with openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam putting together a solid 62-run partnership for the first wicket. Zakir looked in good form but eventually fell to India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who drew first blood and broke the opening stand.
After Zakir’s departure, Shadman, along with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, took on the challenge of stabilizing the innings. Together, they put up a defiant stand, frustrating the Indian bowlers with their determined batting. However, India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who had earlier made headlines with a brilliant century in India’s second innings, stepped up to break the budding partnership.

Ravichandran Ashwin, despite starting his over by giving away five runs, quickly regained control and made a crucial breakthrough. In his eighth over, Ashwin managed to dismiss the well-set Shadman, who had been batting confidently on 35.

Shadman’s dismissal came off a short ball aimed at his pads, and while he attempted to work it through the leg side, he only managed to produce a top edge. A diving Shubman Gill at short mid-wicket took a superb catch to end Shadman’s innings and give India a much-needed wicket. Gill’s athleticism and sharp reflexes turned the tide in India’s favor, further applying pressure on the visitors.

Despite their struggles, Bangladesh displayed commendable grit in their second innings, refusing to back down easily against a daunting target. At the time of writing, Bangladesh were 111 for 2, with Shanto unbeaten on 26 and Mominul Haque keeping him company on 9. While the task ahead remains enormous, the resilience shown by the Bangladeshi batsmen is worthy of praise as they continue to battle in the Chennai Test.
