India’s vice-captain and opening batsman Shubman Gill showcased his class with a breathtaking shot in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match against Bangladesh. The moment came at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 20, when Gill’s monstrous six left even skipper Rohit Sharma visibly impressed.

Chasing 229, India got off to a solid start with Rohit leading the charge, playing his trademark aggressive strokes against Bangladesh’s bowling attack. Gill, playing the perfect supporting role, timed his boundaries to maintain pressure on the opposition. However, the shot that stole the limelight came in the ninth over when Tanzim Hasan Sakib bowled a short-of-length delivery outside off-stump.

Shubman Gill, with minimal footwork, executed a short-arm jab, launching the ball deep into the second tier over mid-wicket—a colossal 98-meter six. Rohit, watching from the non-striker’s end, acknowledged the brilliance with a smile and a nod of appreciation. Gill’s remarkable strokeplay evoked memories of India’s earlier clash with Bangladesh in the 2023 Asia Cup Super Four stage.

Although India had already qualified for the final, Bangladesh managed to pull off a stunning six-run victory. Their batting lineup struggled early, slipping to 59/4, but a crucial stand between Shakib Al Hasan (80 off 85) and Towhid Hridoy (54 off 81) steadied the innings. Late contributions from Nasum Ahmed (44) and Mahedi Hasan (29*) propelled Bangladesh to 265/8.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib, making his debut, rocked India’s chase by removing Rohit Sharma for a duck and Tilak Varma for just 5 runs, reducing India to 17/2. However, Shubman Gill stood tall amidst the collapse, crafting a magnificent 121 off 133 balls. Despite his valiant effort, Bangladesh kept chipping away with crucial wickets.

Shakib Al Hasan, Mahedi Hasan, and Mustafizur Rahman tightened the screws, leaving India struggling. Axar Patel’s late heroics (42 off 34) gave India a glimmer of hope, but Bangladesh held their nerve, bowling out India for 259 in 49.5 overs to secure a memorable win. Gill’s six in Dubai was a testament to his elegance and power, reminding fans of his ability to anchor innings while unleashing breathtaking strokes when needed.
