Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull has criticized Rajasthan Royals’ tactical approach in their IPL 2025 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, questioning why they sent Shimron Hetmyer to bat at No. 8 when their top-order had already collapsed. Doull believes Rajasthan mismanaged their resources, failing to utilize Hetmyer, a proven match-winner—at a more impactful position.

Shimron Hetmyer’s demotion came as Rajasthan introduced Shubham Dubey as their impact substitute during the first innings in Guwahati on Wednesday. Doull, speaking on Cricbuzz, was baffled by the decision, stating that a player retained for ₹11 crore should not be batting so low in the order.

“Why are they protecting Shimron Hetmyer? He bats at No.3 or No.4 for Guyana, yet here he’s down at No.8. It’s poor planning from RR,” Simon Doull remarked. The strategy backfired as Rajasthan, having used their impact sub early, were left with a weakened bowling attack in the second innings.

Kolkata took full advantage, with Quinton de Kock anchoring the chase to perfection. On a slow Barsapara track, the South African opener played a masterful 97* off 61 balls, ensuring Kolkata cruised to an eight-wicket victory. Earlier, Rajasthan struggled against Kolkata’s disciplined bowling unit. Varun Chakravarthy (2/17) and Moeen Ali (2/23) spun a web around the batters, restricting RR to 151/9—well below a competitive total.

Kolkata’s chase never looked in doubt, as De Kock, displaying superb shot selection and controlled aggression, dismantled the target with ease. With eight boundaries and six sixes, he ensured the required rate never climbed beyond a run-a-ball, sealing the win in the 18th over.
Rajasthan’s tactical blunders—both in batting and bowling—ultimately cost them the game, raising questions about their decision-making in high-pressure situations.
