One of the best ODI batsmen ever, former West Indies’ captain, Sir Vivian Richards, had put on display an aggressive brand of batting to win the third and deciding final of the Benson & Hedges World Series in 1988 at Sydney.
Allan Border, the then Australian captain, had won the toss and elected to bat first. In a match that was reduced to 38 overs per side due to persistent rains, Australia scored 226-4 in their allotted quota. Dean Jones was the pick of the batsmen for the home team as he scored an unbeaten 93 (82) with the help of eight fours and two sixes.
For West Indies, Richards, Carl Hooper, and Courtney Walsh picked up a wicket apiece. Rain played a further part in the match. Chasing 108 runs in 18 overs, West Indies scored 111-2 in 13.2 overs. Despite Tom Alderman dismissing Cordon Greenidge (4) and Richie Richardson (0) cheaply, West Indies went on to win the match without much discomfort.
Vivian Richards was the architect of the victory as he scored 60* (40) with the help of six fours and three sixes. He stitched an unbeaten 107-run partnership with Desmond Haynes (40*). Watch the full video:
