Team India is gearing up for a crucial showdown against South Africa in the second Test at Guwahati on November 22, a contest that has suddenly become a series-defining battle. After suffering a stunning 30-run defeat in the opening Test at Eden Gardens, the hosts now find themselves under pressure to bounce back and avoid a rare home series loss.

Chasing a modest target of 123, India’s batting order faltered dramatically in Kolkata, primarily undone by the brilliance of Simon Harmer. The defeat sparked widespread criticism, with many pointing the finger at head coach Gautam Gambhir for India’s questionable strategy and the rank-turner pitch, which came under heavy scrutiny.
However, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak stepped forward in strong defence of Gambhir, calling out what he believes is unfair targeting. “Everyone is going after only Gautam Gambhir, perhaps because certain individuals have an agenda,” Sitanshu Kotak remarked, making his stance clear.

He further highlighted that the conversation has unfairly centred around Gambhir, while the players’ performances have been largely ignored. “Gambhir took it upon himself, but we have been asking for a pitch that will start turning from day three and last four and a half days,” Kotak added, indicating that the team strategy was collectively agreed upon.

Despite the questionable surface, India initially held the upper hand. South Africa were bowled out for 159 in the first innings, with Jasprit Bumrah standing tall once again through a superb five-wicket haul.
India responded with 189, securing a slim but valuable 30-run lead. KL Rahul’s composed 39 and Washington Sundar’s 29 were the standout contributions, while Harmer and Marco Jansen combined to trouble the Indian lineup. South Africa’s second innings saw captain Temba Bavuma anchor the side with a gritty unbeaten 55, the only half-century of the Test. His knock pushed the visitors to 153, setting India a seemingly manageable target.

But Harmer was relentless, producing another four-wicket masterclass. Jadeja’s four-wicket haul and Siraj’s double offered India hope, but the batting collapse in their chase—folding for just 93—sealed a memorable Proteas victory. As the teams head to Guwahati, India, they face a stern test of character, strategy, and adaptability.
