India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has clarified that workload management is primarily designed for fast bowlers, while batters rarely come under that category unless they themselves raise concerns about fatigue. His remarks come amid discussions around vice-captain Shubman Gill’s workload, following his heavy involvement across formats.

Gill recently led India in the five-match Test series in England, played a key role in the Champions Trophy triumph, and went straight into the IPL 2025 with the Gujarat Titans. However, Kotak brushed aside any doubts, insisting there are no red flags regarding Gill’s fitness or mental fatigue.
“I don’t know how you look at workload management, but generally we do it for bowlers, mainly fast bowlers. For batsmen, only if they mentally feel that cricket has become too much for them does it become a concern,” Sitanshu Kotak explained. “In my view, it is not that much of an issue for batters.”

When asked if Gill has tweaked his technique after back-to-back cricketing assignments, Kotak praised his adaptability. He pointed out that modern-day cricketers are far more aware of how to adjust their game to suit different formats.

“Nowadays, players know exactly how to switch between red-ball and white-ball cricket. They understand the demands of powerplays, the middle overs, and even death overs in T20s. Of course, small technical adjustments are needed, but players like Gill are very clear about what needs to be done,” Sitanshu Kotak added.

Gill, who has already amassed 598 runs in 22 T20Is at an impressive strike rate of 141, remains one of India’s most consistent young batters. He will next be in focus during the high-voltage clash against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai, where his form could prove crucial in deciding the outcome.
