Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma have etched their names in the history books by compiling the highest-ever partnership for the opening wicket in a women’s Test match, amassing a monumental unbeaten stand of 293 runs. This remarkable achievement shattered the 20-year-old record for the most runs in a women’s Test for the opening wicket, previously held by Pakistan’s Sajjida Shah and Kiran Baluch, who scored 241 runs against West Indies in Karachi in 2004.
Mandhana, the Indian vice-captain, scored her second Test century, while the young Shafali Verma reached her maiden triple-figure mark, as the duo mercilessly dismantled the South African bowling attack. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Mandhana took 122 balls to reach her hundred, hitting 19 boundaries along the way. Verma, on the other hand, reached her ton in just 113 deliveries, striking 15 fours and two sixes.

The pair came agonizingly close to breaking the 27-year-old record for the highest partnership for any wicket in women’s Test cricket, which stands at 309 runs. This record was set by Australia’s Lindsay Reeler and Denise Annetts in 1987 against England.
Mandhana’s innings came to an end at 149 runs off 161 balls, which included 27 fours and one six, when she was dismissed by Delmi Tucker in the 52nd over of India’s first innings. Despite falling short of the overall partnership record, Mandhana and Verma’s performance has cemented their place in cricket history, showcasing their exceptional talent and resilience.
