Sri Lanka’s emerging batter Sonal Dinusha continued his remarkable run against India by registering his fourth consecutive 50-plus score in the ongoing two-match Test series. The left-hander reached his half-century during the morning session on Day 5 of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. 

Dinusha had already scored a brilliant 103 in Sri Lanka’s first innings after making 100 and 84 in the opening Test at the Galle International Stadium. His latest fifty has now helped him equal a 26-year-old record previously achieved by former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower.

Dinusha has become only the second batter in Test history to score 50 or more runs in all four innings of a two-match Test series against India. Flower was the first to accomplish the feat during Zimbabwe’s 2000 series against India.

Andy Flower scored an unbeaten 183, followed by 70, 55 and another unbeaten 232 across the four innings. Dinusha has now matched the remarkable consistency of the former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper-batter with scores of 100, 84, 103 and 50-plus in the ongoing series.

The 25-year-old has also joined an exclusive group of Sri Lankan batters. He is only the third player from the country, after Kumar Sangakkara and Dimuth Karunaratne, to score at least 50 runs in all four innings of a two-match Test series. Dinusha’s latest achievement also carries wider significance for Asian cricket. He has become the first Asian batter to register four consecutive 50-plus scores in his first four Test innings against India.

Before Dinusha, only four batters from England and the West Indies had achieved the feat. His consistency has made him one of the standout performers of the series despite India maintaining control of the contest. Dinusha could create another piece of history if he produces a century in Sri Lanka’s second innings. A hundred would make him the first batter to score three centuries in his opening two Tests against India.

West Indies legend Everton Weekes previously scored four centuries in his first four Test innings against India, although he achieved the landmark across three matches. With another opportunity to make history still available, Dinusha’s impressive start to Test cricket continues to attract attention.
