Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has come out in strong support of Lionel Messi following Argentina’s defeat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, insisting that the football icon’s legacy cannot be defined by the outcome of a single match. Ganguly believes Messi’s extraordinary career, filled with records, trophies and unforgettable performances, should always be viewed in its entirety rather than through the lens of one disappointing result.
Argentina fell 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time. Spain produced a disciplined and tactically brilliant display, controlling possession for long periods while successfully neutralising Argentina’s attacking threats to claim their second FIFA World Cup title.
Speaking exclusively to News18, Sourav Ganguly praised Spain’s performance but stressed that Messi’s greatness remains untouched despite the defeat. “Lionel Messi’s legacy should never be judged on the basis of a single match. We must always remember that he is a human being, and no one performs at the same level every day. There will be off days. Evaluating his entire career based on one final or one performance is simply unfair,” Ganguly said.

The former India skipper pointed out that Messi has already achieved everything a footballer could dream of. From lifting the FIFA World Cup to breaking countless records and inspiring generations of players, the Argentine superstar has firmly established himself among the greatest footballers in history.
“Messi has already won the World Cup, broken countless records, and established himself as one of the greatest footballers in history through his extraordinary talent. One defeat does not diminish his achievements or his greatness in any way,” Sourav Ganguly added.
Reflecting on the final itself, Sourav Ganguly credited Spain for executing a near-perfect tactical game plan. He admitted he did not watch every match of the tournament but followed the knockout stages closely and was impressed by Spain’s preparation.
“I did not watch the entire World Cup, but I followed several key matches, including the semifinals and the final. Spain never allowed Argentina to play their natural game from the very beginning. Tactically, they were far better prepared. Their game plan was flawless, and their hunger to win was evident. That is why the final became such a one-sided contest. Spain were outstanding as a team and fully deserved to win the World Cup,” he explained.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Ganguly reminded fans that reaching another World Cup final is a remarkable achievement in itself. He noted that football’s knockout format often produces fine margins, where even the strongest teams can fall short on the biggest stage.
“Reaching the final itself is a significant achievement for Argentina. But in football, one team wins and the other loses—that is the nature of the sport. On the day, Spain were the better side and deserved to lift the trophy,”Sourav Ganguly said.
