Former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has thrown his full support behind Virat Kohli, dismissing concerns over the star batter’s form. Ganguly believes Kohli, with his incredible record of 81 international centuries, doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone. He is confident that Kohli, known for his mental resilience, will overcome any challenges on his own.

“Kohli is one of the best in the world. He has scored 81 centuries across formats and has nothing left to prove. He knows what needs to be done and will work it out himself,” Sourav Ganguly told News18.

While Kohli managed just 22 runs off 38 balls in India’s last game, skipper Rohit Sharma provided a strong start with a fluent 41 off 36 deliveries. His opening stand of 69 runs with Shubman Gill laid a solid foundation, with Gill eventually scoring an unbeaten century. Ganguly praised India’s batting firepower and cautioned against judging Rohit solely based on his recent Test performances.

“Rohit is one of the best batsmen in the world. He shouldn’t be judged based on his Test form alone. India’s batting depth is a major strength, with capable batters even down to number eight,” Sourav Ganguly added.

With India set to face Pakistan in Dubai on February 23, Ganguly also backed Mohammed Shami to lead the bowling attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out due to a back injury.

“The pitch in Dubai won’t produce massive totals, so bowling will be crucial. Without Bumrah, Shami has to step up, and he’s a top-class fast bowler. Maintaining rhythm will be key for him,” he explained.

Ganguly also approved of India’s team balance, which includes three spinners, two pacers, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. He further supported head coach Gautam Gambhir’s decision to prioritize KL Rahul over Rishabh Pant in the playing XI.

“Both Rahul and Pant are exceptional players, but the team combination is the coach’s call. Gambhir will select players based on the conditions in Dubai,” Sourav Ganguly said.

India’s recent six-wicket win over Bangladesh has put them in a strong position, while Pakistan suffered a 60-run defeat to New Zealand. A victory against their arch-rivals would all but secure India’s place in the Champions Trophy semifinals.
